High Leigh Conference Centre

High Leigh Conference Centre

This is the conference centre at which we stayed and had our meetings this week. Here’s the history I dug up on it…

The earliest deed on this property goes back to 1403. In 1851, a gold lace manufacturer, Charles Webb, built some of the original parts of the building. But Robert Barclay from a banking and missionary family bought and named this place “High Leigh” in 1871.

A Christian company, First Conference Ltd, purchased the estate upon the death of Mr. Barclay in 1921. Their purpose was to provide affordable conference facilities for any and all Christians.

Since then the building has gone through extensive expansion and is currently having the main entrance refurbished.
