top five lost theories

Shawn, thanks for commenting. Got a Cliff's Notes version of what you're thinking?

Characters are 'avatars' of themselves in a shared, highly immersive experience. The characters all have troubled backgrounds, but are redeemable. The HANSO Org's experimenting in VR world approach to resolving psychological, physical & sociological problems. Diverse group of folks were each set up to have a reason for travel to the same destination. They started out on what appeared to be an actual transoceanic flight. Instead of crashing, they were put under & transported to a high tech facility and are in a semi conscious state. They are interacting with one another in an elaborate Island setting with intriguing environmental elements to keep them stimulated & working through situations. The paralyzed can walk. Those with cancer are cured. Heroin addicts are confronted by piles of heroin, and so on. The 'others' on the Island really are the 'good guys' , as stated in this season's finale. They are avatars of the scientists running the experiment. As a character reaches a point of resolution, they are removed from the VR scene permanently. Sometimes, the characters are allowed to have visitors, who make guest appearances in the shared VR world as avatars of themselves. Re: Very Real, Shared Virtural Reality

the season finale disproved this possibility when it showed the portuguese guys looking for the island -- there is an outside world, and the island does exist.

plausible theory, but only for the fact that the producers themselves said that the island is real. this was due to the multiple people propagating the Purgatory theory, which they debunked as well. if you think it is VR, cool. i don't agree.

'Avatar' is a term used for a representation of a person in a virtual environment.

The location where the Lost group is experiencing their VR experience is in a facility that is on an island.

Shot in the gut was the method for removing Ana's avatar from her VR experience.

Your theory is well thought out but Homestars is right the producers have said the Island is real; and referring to the Losties,"these human beings have hearts, and when they stop beating ,they are dead". Thus,I don't think it's VR.

There are real people behind the Lost avatars. Some will actually die, from cancer. Some actually never will walk again.

The people are real behind the Lost avatars. One will will very likely die from cancer. Another will never walk again. One is struggling with weight and through experience in the Lost environment, may gain the self confidence to resist the virtual food.

Got to go. As the seasons pass, we will find the core story started with a premise that was explained to an executive in an elevator. Only a simple core story, similar to that described in this thread, will have been capable of sustaining so many coincidental circumstances while retaining some consistency. Thanks for your input.

liam, yeah, that's what the article points out. i can't wait for the finale wednesday!

the writers of lost disguarded those theories about a quarter of the way through season one. the best theory so far is that the island is designed to keep the magnetic fields on earth stable, it is scientific fact that the poles on earth could switch, the theory i heard is that the computer in the hatch is to keep the electromagnets running to keep the world safe.
