censorship vs boycott

by rob on May 18, 2006

Censorship: The act of hiding, removing, altering or destroying copies of art or writing so that general public access to it is partially or completely limited

Boycott: To protest by refusing to purchase from someone, or otherwise do business with them

So if a movie theatre refuses to show an advertisement, are they censoring or boycotting?

UPDATE: I found out that the ads were purchased by Cineplex Odeon. After purchasing, they decided not to run it. I assume the money will be returned, but that has yet to be confirmed.

Yes, James you are correct that the site is still out there but how will the public know where to go if there is no ad to be shown. I believe that it's censorship.
  • I would see this as boycotting. The information is still available. Anyone who wishes to can go to www.discussdavinci.com without having the theatres get in the way. The theatres simply have chosen not to advertize it.
  • I would see it as censorship.
