You may have noticed that sometimes I add some technorati tags to the end of my posts. You may be thinking, “What the heck is that all about?” or “How can I get me some technorati tagging too?”
Well, here’s what I know.
Let’s start with this: What’s a Technorati?
Technorati is a blog search engine. As of this posting they claim they are currently tracking 41.6 million sites and 2.5 billion links. When they say sites, they pretty much mean blogs. In their own words:
Technorati is a real-time search engine that keeps track of what is going on in the blogosphere — the world of weblogs…Technorati provides a live view of the global conversation of the web.
Okay, so what’s a tag?
Technorati defines it quite well:
A tag is like a subject or category. This page shows the most popular tags, starting with the ones that are hottest today. The bigger the text, the more active that tag is. We’re currently tracking 7.2 million tags.
Alrighty then, how do I tag my posts so technorati knows what topics I’m writing about?
Ah, the meat of why you’re reading this, right? Well, of course technorati does a great job explaining how to do it. The short answer is that it depends on if your blog utility (software) supports categories or not.
If you use Word Press or others that support categories, any category you check for that post will be sent to Technorati as a tag. If you use one like Blogger that doesn’t (or you want to add more tags without creating more categories), then you have to insert some simple code to do it. Instead of re-typing it here, just see what Technorati suggests.
You may need to be patient because sometimes after you’ve posted and tagged technorati, it could take a few minutes for it to show up. Because I use Word Press, I have a plugin to make it more simple to add multiple tags.
Another tip: bloggers should set up a Technorati Profile and claim your blogs. Don’t ask me why. I think it’s a good idea. But one thing it’ll do is give you a tag cloud of your tags. Kinda nifty. Maybe I can eventually figure out how to get that cloud on my blogs!
Tag often. Tag well. Tag responsibly.
