Another reason to dig Gmail and Google Talk: Reply by chat.
I just tried it. If one of your contacts is online and available, and you already have an email conversation going in Gmail, if you want to reply, you can now reply by chatting…and the chat conversation will be recorded in the email thread.
Slick.
If you don’t have Google Talk yet, I still recommend you get it with other free goodies through GooglePack.
