are you a reader?

GiftsI am mostly. I don’t read everything, but I like to read books especially when traveling. I have a lineup for my next trip just waiting. And I started reading Don Quixote this weekend.

You probably know the story about him. He’s the Spanish dude who went insane, became a knight, and jousted with windmills. But do you know why he went mad? We’re told on the first page: he read too much! Day and night he’d read stories of chivalry and knighthood so he snapped and became one in a day when there were no more knights.

Anyway, the ironic thing to me is that this book is about 1000 pages, and on the first page the author tells me the main character goes mad because he read too much!

So I told you that story to tell you this one — I wanted to tell you about the only books I enjoyed reading as a kid. Do you remember the Choose Your Own Adventure books? That’s all I’d read. Now they are comming to DVD. Now that’s a cool idea!

I wonder if anyone has ever done a choose-your-own-adventure website or blog. Now that would be…interesting.

  • I know people have talked about that choose-your-own-path kind of story. In hypertext, you can do it. I’ve thought about it myself.

I loved those old choose-your-own-adventure books! I forgot all about them. I always got frustrated that I couldn’t do all the adventures…then I’d lose my place. Don’t know anything about websites. Sorry.

  • I loved those books. What’s funny to me is, in retrospect, how dark some of them were. I think it wouldn’t be a stretch to say they were some of the first “horror” novels I ever read. Makes me want to go to a used bookstore and see if I can track some of ’em down.

  • Yes! I had scads of those things. You could be a spy, underwater explorer, get abducted by aliens, etc – all in one day.

I used to always get the same endings, so I started reading the book backwards to find the alternates. Sometimes I felt like I was going insane…
