whofor art thou, juliet?

Last week on Lost we were introduced to Juliet. I think it’s a very decent guess that she’s married to Ben (formally known as Henry Gale). If not married, at least a history…and Juliet is unhappy with her situation.

It was obvious during the show that her relationship with Ben wasn’t the best. The book she picked for the book club was Carrie by Stephen King — a book that was said Ben wouldn’t like. Check out the look she’s giving Ben in this photo. When Jack let water rush in, Ben ran for it and closed the door on her. Perhaps Ben was all tough-talk, but it looked like he didn’t care if Juliet died or not. At the end their exchange was like they knew each other well, respected each other, but didn’t like each other.

But here’s what I think is the most convincing thing that Juliet isn’t a happy camper: she loses it when listening to the song Downtown. Check out some of the lyrics from the song:

When you’re alone and life is making you lonely
You can always go – downtown
When you’ve got worries, all the noise and the hurry
Seems to help, I know – downtown
[…]
You can forget all your troubles, forget all your cares
So go downtown, things’ll be great when you’re
Downtown – no finer place, for sure
[…]
Don’t hang around and let your problems surround you
[…]
And you may find somebody kind to help and understand you
Someone who is just like you and needs a gentle hand to
Guide them along

Most TV shows and movies, especially Lost, do this sort of thing on purpose. Juliet picks that song to comfort herself. She longs to get off the island. She’s tired of her marriage. She’s tired of her circumstances. She just wants out…she wants to go back to a life she either imagines or remembers — city life, not island life.

Why is she still on the island? Not sure. Afraid to break loose? Logistics too tough? But the song does foreshadow an escape…and not an escape alone. Maybe she’ll find someone to guide along on her escape, someone like Jack?

Speaking of Jack, remember when he asked Juliet what that place was he was held in? Her reply was “that was a long time ago”. She wants out, no doubt.

Lost…and Gone Forever has a great recap of last week’s eppy and a preview to tomorrow’s show. Lots of people didn’t like this first one, but I did. It’s a setup for the rest of this story (arc). I can’t wait for this story to develop!

    Wow, nice thoughs man

What do you think of the theory of to groups of Others?

Thanks, Dave. With the others, I really believe now that there are at least two sets of them on the island. Ben in Season 2 finale said “we’re the good guys”. In Season 3 premiere he sends guys to the survivors and observe, not get involved, make a list, and come back in 3 days. The “Tailies” were attacked the first night. I don’t think it’s Ben’s group, but another group.

Who are they? I’m not sure I know yet, but have ideas…
