Expresso
I used to think espresso was actually “expresso”. I mean, it made sense. You get it quick. You get the caffeine kick quicker.
But it’s really espresso.
I started figuring this out while traveling because not everyone has the same standard for coffee. In Kenya when you order “regular coffee” they ask if you mean black or white. In the Netherlands, “regular coffee” comes like a capuchino or latte (what’s the difference, anyway)? In Puerto Rico, it’s cafe con leche (coffee with milk).
Sometimes it’s safer to just order “black coffee” with an American accent. Or “Cafe Americano” which is watered down espresso.
Or just deal with espresso. Negro, por favor.
Navigating foreign coffee can be tricky. I think a latte is a cappucino minus the foam.
