Nooooooooooooo! But he’s right.

I hate it when people like this are right. A guy named Rob (not me) is also the Business Pundit (so says his blog). ‘Tis a good blog I like to follow.

But I hate it when he’s right about stuff like this post: Why I Gave Up Deserts To Become a Better Entrepreneur:

Plato wrote that “the first and best victory is to conquer the self.” Warren Buffett said something to the effect of “if you have discipline in the small things you will have discipline in the large things.” I’ve read enough about the human brain to know that if certain actions are repeatedly taken, the brain becomes used to them and they become easier. I started to wonder if I could build my overall discipline by practicing more discipline in a small area of my life. I needed something that was difficult, but not in my face every day. I decided to give up deserts. For one year.

I wasn’t cutting out sugar. The definition of a desert was anything sweet that I would eat after lunch or dinner because I was craving it. The goal was to fight the impulse, more than anything else. No ice cream, cakes, cookies, candy, brownies, pies, or anything that would typically be considered a dessert.

But he didn’t necessarily do it for health. He did it for the discipline that would translate into getting things done better.

Eight months have passed, and I’ve had no desserts, and there have really only been 3 or 4 occasions that I seriously struggled and thought I should give up the stupid goal. What are the results? Well, I think the past 8 months have been the single most productive period in my entire life. I still miss deadlines, forget about things, and sometimes get distracted, but not nearly as often as I used to. In other words, I think it is actually working. My ability to buckle down and focus even when I don’t feel like it has increased. In the same way that lifting weights makes a 50 pound box seem lighter the next time you have to carry it, focusing on a somewhat boring task for a few hours seems much easier than it was in the past.

A nice side benefit is that I’ve also felt much better in general. I’ve had more energy, I’ve slept better, and I’ve been sick less than normal. I haven’t seen any negative mental side effects such as decreased creativity, or a diminished capacity to deal with multitasking situations (although I try to avoid these when possible).

When I gave up sugar a couple years ago for health reasons, I, too, lost weight and felt great. I was able to concentrate easier. I wasn’t so easily distracted. Not like I am now.

Oh look! A crazy dog growling at his own leg!

But I have vacation coming up, birthdays, anniversaries, holidays. How will I ever make it?

I guess it’ll be one of those things I’ll perpetually start tomorrow.

Latin Phrases

rob | whatever | Thursday, September 6th, 2007

Do you know what these Latin phrases mean? You’ve probably heard them before:

  • Caveat Emptor
  • Persona Non Grata
  • Habeas Corpus
  • Cogito Ergo Sum
  • E Pluribus Unum
  • Quid Pro Quo
  • Ad Hominem
  • Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam
  • Sui Generis

I knew a few, never heard of a few. Here are the answers.

Google Reader Improvements

rob | blog and rss tips | Thursday, September 6th, 2007

Well I’ll be! Google has gone and done a novel thing. They have added Google search to Google Reader. I’m still perplexed why it took so long. Seemed like a no-brainer. Guess that’s why I’m not working for them.

They also changed the unread items numbering system they used. It used to be if you had over 100 items unread, it would just say 100+ items. Now it gives you the number.

And I found out that they’ve added a quick way to collapse the left-hand listings of feeds.

Funny how little things like this make my day.

Kevin told me first.

Felix the Cat 5 lands

rob | hurricane | Tuesday, September 4th, 2007

Dang. Nicaragua is getting slammed this morning by a Category 5 hurricane, Felix.

It almost seems that the 2007 pattern is low in the Caribbean which means Central America and the Yucatan may be in for a long hurricane season (like Central Florida in 2004, North Carolina in another year I can’t remember). These ‘canes seem to go in patterns.

And check this out:

Felix is the second category 5 hurricane to make landfall this year, and before Hurricane Dean a week or so ago, there were no land falling hurricanes at category 5 status for 15 years. Now here in 2007, two back-to-back category 5 hurricanes making landfall, and both hurricanes Dean and Felix were intensifying at the time of landfall.

When you look at the map of Felix vs Dean and with a possible repeat with now Invest 98 probably becoming a Tropical Depression soon, I see a pattern that doesn’t bode well for Central America.

To break the pattern, Invest 99 is trying to form off the SC-GA coast and some say it could come to Central Florida. I doubt it though.

Status Updates Deactivated

rob | whatever | Monday, September 3rd, 2007

Based on unsolicited feedback from a few people (yes, I have a flimsy spine), I’m turning off the status updates that appear on this blog. You know, they are the one-line things telling you what I’m up to: my micro-blogging.

So from now on if you wanna know what I’m up to, you can follow me in Facebook (private unless you’re my friend) or Twitter (public).

But right now I’m getting ready for the Clemson-FSU game after taking my wife out to Outback Steakhouse.

Pierced

rob | navel gazing, spiritual | Saturday, September 1st, 2007

Rob's earring
Yup. I did it this morning. 4 mm titanium ball.

The inevitable question is ‘why did you pierce your ear?’ so I thought I’d try and spell it out for you.

Rob-and-piercing-gun1. Just because. I’ve wanted to for a long time. You know, just ’cause.

2. I have to feed my rebellious side occasionally.

3. I want to begin my dream of becoming more bionic.

4. It reminds me of my commitment to God.

Maybe that sounds weird but there really is some truth to it. Hear me out…

Before today I only wore one piece of jewelry. It’s a gold ring that I wear on my left “ring finger”. I wear it because it’s a reminder of my commitment to my wife.

Starting today I am wearing a new piece of jewelry. It’s a titanium ball on my left ear lobe. I wear it because it’s a reminder of my commitment to my God.

When I see it, many thoughts go through my mind, but one of them is that reminder of my commitment to continually pursue God’s best for me.

There is a bit of a precedent too. In early Hebrew culture, slavery was a way of life. After six years slaves were allowed to leave. But if the slave gave up his freedom and wanted to stay a slave to his master, the master was to pierce his ear as a mark of that commitment and sacrifice given.

I recognize some of the cultural nuisances that it has even dating back to very early human civilizations. But I’m okay with that. Cultural mores change and adjust.

Rob-on-floor-after-piercingSo this morning Patricia and I went to get it done at Claire’s. It really didn’t hurt at all. No blood either.

It didn’t bother me at all until she showed me how to clean it. Once I started wiggling it around I started to feel flush and so I stretched out on the floor for a few minutes.

Tough guy image out the door.

But there you go. That’s the story. Truth be told it’s been several years in the making.

I plan for it to stay there indefinitely. I guess until my body rejects the titanium or I wake up one day and think ‘that’s a stupid way to show your commitment to anything!’

So there you have it.
