My friend of mine sent me an email asking a LOST question about Charlotte and Richard:
I keep reading in various recaps and such that Charlotte has been to the island before and that maybe she was born on the island. Where is that coming from? The Charlotte question is the one that is bugging me the most right now. Well that trying to figure out who Richard is. I don’t really remember him either, but he is obviously a very important figure an leader of the Others.
Well, I’ll take a stab at it. There’s been a few times that we the viewer have been given clues that Charlotte may have been to the island before. To help me remember, I consulted the entry on Charlotte on Lostpedia, the wikipedia for Lost. Here’s some quotes – see if they jog your memory:
- She showed great pleasure at arriving on the Island, smiling and laughing.
- Frank asked her if she wanted to return to the freighter by helicopter, but she refused, explaining that she had work to do on the Island.
- Miles asked her why she was willing to leave so soon, after trying hard to get back to the Island again – implying that she has been to the Island before. Charlotte was very visibly surprised that Miles knew of this. Later, Charlotte told Daniel that she was not going to go back to the freighter quite yet, because she was still “looking for where she was born.”
Also remember that off-island she was at least familiar with Dharma. Remember she was in Tunsia on an excavation dig where she found a polar bear wearing a Dharma coller in which she seemed to be familar with. She was quite happy to make this find – not shocked to find a polar bear in the desert. This doesn’t mean she’s from the island, but it sure goes along with some of the other clues.
Was Charlotte born on the island? We don’t really know yet. But there seem to be several clues and I think we’ll probably get them confirmed soon.
As for Richard, yeah, if you don’t remember him, you’re just not remembering! Again from Lostpedia about Richard:
Richard Alpert is an inhabitant of the Island who apparently has some sort of leadership role among the Others. He was also part of the group known to the DHARMA Initiative as the Hostiles. From his first appearance in the 1950s (making him at least 70 years old) to current events on the Island, Richard perpetually appeared to be in his 30s or 40s, though his hairstyle and manner of dress change depending on the circumstances on or off the Island. In the outside world, he has presented himself as a recruiter for Mittelos Bioscience.
My guess about Richard is that he somehow represents the island – like Jacob or something. I’m not sure. But I think his role is to recruit leaders. If you remember, he met both Ben and Locke as children. I think we’ll be learning more about Richard as well soon.
